Between the fall of 2020 and 2022, Barbara Swanson (Dalhousie University) studied the contents of the Cantus Index while researching the revisions to hymn texts undertaken by Pope Urban VIII for the 1632 edition of the Roman Breviary. She created a framework for classifying the revisions and for connecting the revised texts with the original plainchant using the Cantus ID 'variant' numbering system.
