Victoria Pauli Victory of Paul (at Muenster) |
Jun.27 | 14062720 |
This feast was introduced in Münster by Bishop Ludolf von Holte around 1243, and removed in 1759/60 (see Germania Sacra, Neue Folge 17,1, p.437.) It was created in response to von Holte's 27 June 1242 victory at Ermen against the nobles of Meinhövel and their allies ("Victoria Sancti Pauli" or "sunte Pawels segevechting"--cf. GS, NF 37,2, p. 43; also GS 7,3, p.299, and GS 7,1 p.124), which strengthened the power of the bishop of Münster (cf Kohl, Wilhelm, "Ludolf von Holte" in: Neue Deutsche Biographie 15 (1987), S. 298-299 [Online-Version]; URL: https://www.deutsche-biographie.de/pnd137956061). As of 1992, a commemorative plaque marks the battle site, which is approximately 30 km south-east of Münster: https://www.komoot.com/highlight/728896. |
